Bold Stripes Skirt + a Tank Top

I like to say I stay ahead of the game when it comes to certain trends. Some others, not so much and I find myself pulling a 'Leo the late bloomer'. Mainly because I have to really like a trend before I jump in and secondly I never let beauty or fashion standards dictate my looks.

Timeless as nautical stripes are, I've never cared for them. Don’t get me wrong, it's fun to see what everyone else does with them but I just don’t care for them on me. Lately though, this ‘come back kid’ has grown on me. Vertical, horizontal and everything in-between have flown into my closet faster than … fill the blank. I can almost hear you say 'she did it again'. Yes I did. Faster that what? Whatcha come up with? Speed of light? Hey I don’t teach hyperbole, not a part of my kinder standards.
Common Core told me that!

Just like gingham, micro pleats and cold shoulder, stripes are easily one of the most wearable trends to hit high street from the runways. The fashion gods didn’t have to push very hard for this to take. Stripes take a look from meh to major, from blah to fab, from nah to heck yeah! Even though I’ve been dipping my toes in this and stripping striping, this I believe is the debut of this trend on FI.

I paired it with a flirty tank top (wait a minute, how is a tank top sexy? I’m dying laughing. Leave it to a blogger!) and cherished ankle boots in a Fall approved color. Cali is home and thanks to great weather, we’re still enjoying the freedom to wear tank tops. Without jackets over might I add (At the risk of making y’all a tad envious). I kept the look clean and clutter free. With hair that big, who needs any accessories, aside from my ring and a string choker.

I do not let life kick me down, I do what I have to do and I do not get defeated.
And I haven’t been defeated so far. I’m speaking in terms of my health. I had my first check up since I announced on here that I had cancer. Nervous doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt before hand. Aside from my family, I told a handful of friends including Chika Akwiwu of BHA who is also a cancer survivor and who coincidentally also had a check up last week. I'll tell you more about her in the near future but we encouraged each other days before. She sent me an uplifting message on the morning of my appointment and I cheered her on on her appointment day as well. Having someone who can relate to all the feelings, from fear to anger to nervous to hopeful and to thankful is unmatched.
Girl, thank you!

Well, this time I told myself I'd be brave and not shed a tear. So what did I do? I made up. A full face of makeup, the kind you don’t want to ruin with tears. A beautiful pink on my lid, razor sharp cut crease, ombre lips created with Anastasia Beverley Hills Milk Shake liquid lipstick and Mac lip gloss Vino. And lashes for miles of course. And then I took selfies. From the hospital bed. Even as my iv was started, I took selfies. The nurses were so tickled. I did that just to get my mind off things. My preliminary tests came out great and I’m going in to meet with my oncologist Dr Bahl on Wednesday. Like my lil sister said, ‘prayer mode is still activated’. I’m also counting on your good thought and vibes.
On a lighter note, my mom just told me the funniest thing. She says she devotes a full Rosary daily to Hillary Clinton, in hopes that she wins on Tuesday.
My jaw is still dropped.

Hey ghouls, hope y’all had a great Halloween!

  1. Lovely, You killed it as usual. It could easily have passed for a monochrome look, either way, love the stripes, also tank tops are SEXY I die for them, hanging or body like;

  4. you look ravishing darling! A tank top can be flirty...especially when paired with that gorgeous striped midi skirt. I absolutely love those ankle boots with high heels...so fabulous! such a great colour for Fall...Your ankles are so thin, I didn't notice that before. My mother always disliked the fact that she had thin ankles until I told her that it is a thing...it makes the leg look slimmer and everyone wants them, so it's a good not a bad thing. Anyway, I used to think that the ankle boots make the leg look shorter but it doesn't have to be like that...it's all about finding the right balance...as you demonstrated...here those ankle boots paired with that midi skirt make the legs look really long...so it all depends. I think that a high waist is an important factor as well when we want to achieve this effect or make our legs look longer...

It's funny, recently I was getting dressed and my husband asked me why I don't wear my ankle boots and I said that I think that in this combo they would make my legs look shorter, to what my husband replied: Don't worry, I know how long your legs are. Ha ha...he creaks me up. A day before he had asked a friend of ours why he choose dark grey for walls of his home, saying that a lighter colour would make the room look bigger. I know how big my room is, the friend replied. So, my husband reminded me of that anegdote and he had to point out he knows the 'real state' of things.:)....love your accessories in this outfit too. That chocker is perfect...and that green bag is such a cool pop of colour.

Anyway, I do really like your outfit....I love how you're embracing your love for fashion and inspiring all of us by sharing it with us. I know it must still be a difficult time for you. My husband's sister is very nervious every times she does her check ups and it has been many many years since she was treated for breast cancer. It is perfectly normal to worry, it would be strange if one didn't worry and had doubts and apprehansions...worrying means ones care and wants to get better, as one should. I think my husband's sister was operated before the two of us ever met, so it must have been about 10 years ago but I can understand why she worries still..It is such a shock to learn one has cancer and it takes time to come in terms with it- in a way it is for life...even when there is no chance of cancer returning, it is still something we need to deal with. Follow up care and check ups are very important. It is good that you have a friend you can talk to, a friend who can understand you completely because she is going through the same thing. When I was in a hospital (in 2012 I spent about 6 months there), I used to talk a lot with one guy who was hospitalized for the same thing (Chron). We are about the same age, so we could relate one to another...and I think those long talks helped both of us at the time...being in hospital for so long, really isolates a person, so I guess we were lucky to have one another during that period.

I'm wishing you all the best, you're in my prayers!

p.s. so funny about your mother and the rosary:)

  6. Hi Idu,

My heart dropped into my tummy when I saw "Cancer" and I quickly raced to read that post. Ah! I am so happy that you are alright. You are such an inspiration, the way you live your life to the fullest!

I actually don't have any striped prints, I'm gonna whip up a skirt similar to yours, the silhouette is both lady-like and elegant.

You look absolutely lovely, as usual. Have a happy weekend.

PS: I do hope Hillary wins. :-)

I’m still tickled that your mom is praying the rosary for Hilary to win. Apparently, my dad who’s just visiting, thinks he’s Hilary's campaign manager...haha! Bless their hearts...gotta love them. Have a wonderful weekend.
