Balloon Hem, an Art to Wear

Balloon skirt, monochrome look

Just like monochrome, bubble everything is having a moment yet again, another proof that fashion remains cyclical. Boy am I glad to have held on to some pieces from way back, including a lovely red Oscar De La Renta balloon cocktail dress, for their fateful comeback to the scene.
Great fashion forecasting on my part dare I add.
Ha!

I am most certainly a bubble enthusiast, always have been and always will be!

You?
Have you reopened the chapter on the deflated balloon looking trend that has slowly but surely trickled down from the runway to the highway yet?

THE LOOK
With a curve emphasizing drawstring adjustable paper bag waist, and a half deflated balloon appearance, this skirt definitely has a silhouette worth a lot of attention.
I mean, It got mine, yours too I’m sure!
The feature that takes the cake in my book is one I like to call 'a girls best friend'. Any guesses?

In a hot pursuit for this runway trend? You can buy or even better DIY here! I mean, what’s better than a customized item of clothing?

I paired my skirt with a plain oversized orange sweater knotted in the back and pulled off one shoulder, perfect hacks to add interest to a look. Finished the look with a fedora and a pair of So Kate heels. And because I was going to see Black Panther for the third time shame on me, I decided to throw on the fabulous Ankara disc earrings.

THE HAIR
My real hair is short, kinky and braided down under wigs for the most part. Lately I’ve had the 'chop it off' twitch. My daughter chopped hers off and I loved it. When a friend of mine did the chop last weekend, I knew I wasn’t going to be on the fence much longer.

Two days later, I chopped mine. I stood right there in front of my bathroom mirror and chopped off most of my hair. I’m wearing what’s left of it in bantu knots under the fedora and LOVING it. Not sure when I’ll be brave enough to take off the hat just yet though. Ha!

A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND
You mind sharing what your guess was?
<<<<Drumroll>>>>
Pockets!
My go to for that effortless slouch. Or a hide away for my car keys. My re app essentials. Or even that one piece of gum. Sadly these pockets weren't functional, YIKES! I stuffed them with tissue to add an extra oomph to the pouf. Didn't really work but I tried (shrug emoji).

What do you store in your pockets?

  3. gosh, what a gorgeous outfit! You always have the best styling. This one is so fabulous!!!! What a way to greet Spring.

Fashion does walk in circles, doesn't it? But redisovering things is no less fun than discovering them. I can't wait for you to show us that Oscar's cocktail bubble dress. In the meantime, this outfit is more than enough.

That red balloon skirt is fabulous and I do love how you styled it with that orange sweater and leopard print stilettos. The Ankara earrings are super pretty and the fedora hat finishes the outfit nicely.

  25. I'm really attracted to the African statement earrings and I love that it has different designs on both side for a more versatile look and this color blocking is everything. Orange and pink goes well together if done right.

  32. Even though you look fab in your hat, gurl, take that hat off and show off your fabulous hair. The bantu knots look great. Even though I have been natural for a few years now I could never do bantu knots correctly. Someone has to do them for me. I wish I could get it right because I would wear them more often. I love the bright colors in your look and the color combination gives me all types of happy vibes.

  38. Idu! You are so right...fashion is very cyclical, and for the same reason, I held on to a BCBG maxazria balloon dress from way back as well. I may have to style it soon. I love your take on styling this balloon skirt. I went for the black, but now loving the red as well...I might just give in...Ha! I am SO excited for your big chop and can't wait for the big reveal.
