How to Dress Up an Ankara Skater Dress

How to Dress Up an Ankara Skater Dress

Spring sprung in case you've just crawled out of hibernation, Ha! The Bay Area weather has 'not so shockingly' been a roller coaster, 70s one day and dipping to 50s the very next even with bright sunny skies. Deception at it's best! With lots of rain too and gosh how I relish every drop that lands noisily atop the awning right outside my bedroom window. Music to my ears. Sheer delight. My bed beckons. Zzzz.... until the 5am alarm rudely interrupts the bliss. Then it's work, home and the cycle repeats.

It's my favorite time of year!
It's also that time of year when the 'do I wear a jacket today or not' dilemma peaks. It's also the time of year marked by cherry blossoms appearing are all over, everything you can think of blooming, birds chirping, layers gradually being peeled off. And 'skin' is in once again meaning the legs must be shaved, annoying allergy symptoms are here and so is Easter.

I'm not sure how the date is decided but Easter's late this year to every teacher's and students of course (PUSD) chagrin having to work a long stretch through March and well into April before Spring Break. It's finally here and I plan on enjoying my well deserved time off albeit being very short.

Enough of the gushing about me, what have you been up to? And what are you doing on Easter Sunday?

"If I had my way, I'd wear a dress like this on a daily basis. Complete with a fancy fascinator of course".
It's safe to say that skater dresses have become a fashion staple. They are versatile enough to be dressed up as shown in these pictures, or dressed down for Summer with gladiators, a sun hat and killer sunnies for instance. An addition of tights and thigh high boots finished with a chic jacket will make you Winter ready.

Regardless of your body type, you'd find that skater dresses are very flattering and quite easy to pull off. They create the legs for days effect because of their mini length and capture the image of multifaceted femininity, playfulness and innocence.
I am a fan! You?

Whatever your plans are for Easter, be it going to service, brunch with family or 'linner' over at a friend's, staying stylish is a no brainer and what better than a comfortable Ankara skater dress to keep you looking impeccable. It's a perfect piece for parties and even a date night. I accessorized my look with a fascinator hat, a pair of lace black ankle boots and a black clutch.

If this flirty lil dress speaks to you, hit the folks at Ife Amitie. All you need to pull it off is a hint of a rebellious attitude, :). Thank me later.

Have a fantastic Easter!!!!

Black Dress with Ankara appliques
Black Dress with Ankara appliques
Black Dress with Ankara appliques

This dress with it’s full skirt is a polished update to the classic Little Black Dress. A perfect way to transform your old black dress into the live of the party, the floral Ankara appliqués accent the hem and adds an oomph to an already stand out piece.

Little Black (Floral) Dress

Bold is one sure way that I describe my style and every piece that makes up this look from the fabulous necklace to the cut out layered sleeves top to the Ankara pants speak to that.

Hi guys! Hope your week was great. Today I’m reintroducing two amazing brands Takai By Angela a household name around are and Cryatalucci whose design debuted here.

Every piece from Takai is a show stopper in my book and this one is no exception. They are also versatile and can be dressed up or down. The ‘Chicago Style’ is a hand crafted gemstone and comes with a pair of matching ear rings. This piece retails for 300$ and it’s best attributes are the color, design and perfect fit on the neck. You best believe I couldn’t stop admiring it long after the shoot, Ha!

Like I said in this post here, Takai by Angela is a one stop shop for bags, shoes, fascinators and custom clothing to name a few. I’m a new kid on the block when it comes to wearing Ankara pieces so one of my favorite things to do aside from scrolling pages and pages of their fabulous jewelry is browsing the custom clothing tab of the site. Have a look for yourself!

By the way, they have their Winter Wonderland show coming up on November 17, and that's a show not to miss!

Remember the pink layered sleeves here? Then you’d recognize the royal blue version that’s recently restocked and comes in sizes S to XL. This stand out piece fits like a glove and had me totally feeling like royalty. Retailing at 60$, this is a total steal! Be sure to stop by the site here for this as well as other fabulous pieces they offer.

I went for a pair of high waist Ankara pants , a pair of Miumiu heels that sadly didn’t show and a black YSL clutch to finish this look.

I hope you like this look as much as I do.

Cancer Walk Remember my intro of my friend, a mother and and breast cancer survivor  HERE? She founded  BHAF (BREAST HEALTH ANGELS FOUNDATION) and successfully organized the foundation's first 5K walk in 2016. BHAF'S 2ND 5K walk is going down on the 30th of September and this time, it's grown from 4 to 10 cities strong, all walking on the same day. Interested in painting the town red pink to create awareness? Please join the walk in a city close to you. You may register to walk, sponsor or donate to the cause at  WWW.THEAFRICANBARBIE.ORG

Layered Sleeves Top, High Waisted Ankara Pants and a Gemstone Necklace

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

What a gorgeous mix of colors in this ruffle and flare Ankara dress, styled on a gloomy Winter day, and paired with an orange Louis Vuitton bag,  Miumiu denim ankle wrap heels, and a colorful statement necklace. Thank goodness my jacket of choice was a simple denim one, albeit being distressed. This look is full of life and energy and totally cheered me up, no pun intended.

Meet Idu, the latest Ankara enthusiast.
You guessed it. I’ve been bit by the Ankara bug. To my friends that encouraged me to give it a shot, I say 'look what you’ve done'! You created a monster!

The Ankara trend is in a league of it's own and is growing like wildfire. I dipped my toe in the trend here with a top. This time around I bit a little more and went for a dress. What’d be next, a trench coat? Ha!

This fun and flirty dress checks every box for me. I couldn’t stop admiring <<drum roll>> ME! Cat walking, twisting and twirling in front of the mirror for hours minutes on end shame on me but that’s how much I loved it. Has that ever happened to you? Loved someone something so much you just couldn’t help yourself?

This look wasn't planned and honestly I’d have never thought to pair all these pieces together. But then Africans dress very richly and colorfully. So to pull off an African print look, best be prepared to embrace colors. Less More is more. And my love for colors doesn’t usually go unnoticed especially when there’s my favorite color purple in the mix.
Ohh yeah, happy gal!

Happy Hump day loves!
We're excited to be back on Wednesdays, yay! The chill is still here accompanied by a steady diet of all things carbs that I shouldn’t be looking at let alone touching. The closest I’ve come to eating veggies lately was a nacho cheese taco from Taco Bell. SMDH. Turning that around right away and I mean it.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Layered Ankara Mini Dress + Statement Necklace

Saturday, December 10, 2016

Weekends are an absolute delight for us all aren't they? I'm especially thrilled cos it's been crazy busy lately.

African prints are having quite a moment and I'm pretty stoked about that. Embraced by Beyonce, Rihanna and tons of fashion gals and designers, this trend is sweeping the globe. I love how playful and colorful they are.

I have to admit that much as I love ankara pieces, I am a little fuzzy on styling them. My friend Chinny sent me this top a little over a year ago and it's been hanging in my closet.  I was invited to an African party and thought my lovely ankara top with its cute ruffle and flare peplum would be a perfect way to get my feet wet with this trend.

I paired it with a turtle neck top and a pair of jeans cos the chill is here, I kid you not. I love how it turned out but I’ll let you be the judge.

Mice Update
I did mention here that I of all people, found mice in the classroom last week, one of the gazillion reasons I was excited for last weekend. Like I don't almost throw a party in anticipation of each weekend's arrival. I'm happy to report that the exterminators came in and determined it was just one mouse. They found and removed it. From what I understand it was a baby mouse ( like I care, mice are mice, period!) but I'm very relieved and starting to gradually feel relaxed in kinder Room 102 again.
Thought you'd like to know, :).
